Wes cup group stage concludes

The group stage for the Wes Cup has concluded and most of the favorites have qualified. The two big omissions is 1) Brasilia, last year’s finalist, which has been knocked out on goal difference; and 2) Ankara, the RoW champ that lost a tight final group game vs. Houston.
The knockout stage this year is one of the strongest in years. It includes:
— Liverpool, last year’s winner.
— Naples, recent finalist.
— Beijing, multiple Wes Cup winner.
— Houston, another perennial winner of the cup.
— Pristina, a historic club that used to be dominant in the competition.
— Bern, probably the last team to really have a dominant run of Wes Cup trophies.
Liverpool are probably the favorites by sheer team strength and recent form. But a recently rebuilt Beijing brings a wealth of experience at an elite level. The rest are probably on a par and can all beat each other. Much will depend on the ease of early matchups, which are due to be drawn over the next few days.
The chances of a new Wes Cup winner are certainly slim this year, but Naples may have one final run with its aging team. Bern’s veterans are also looking for one more trophy before the team begins a long and hardy team rebuild.
